Huge Turnout for D96 Dash!

Huge Turnout for first-ever D96 Dash 5K run & walk

Under blue skies and bright sunshine, hundreds of children and adults didn’t let the cool morning temperatures on the first Sunday of October dampen their enthusiasm to take part in the D96 Dash. More than 400 people registered for Kildeer-Countryside School District 96’s first-ever 5K Run and Walk to benefit 21st century technology in all district schools.

Participants who flocked to Twin Groves Middle School for the big event got to loosen up their muscles at the pre-race, warm-up stretching session led by Prairie Elementary School physical education teacher Robin Lehtman. District 96 Superintendent Julie Schmidt then thanked participants at the start line and enlisted a little help from students to count down the final seconds into the microphone before the Dash got underway. Everyone received a medal after crossing the finish line and then enjoyed plenty of snacks and refreshments supplied by the event’s many sponsors.

Included among the hundreds in attendance were Illinois’ 53rd District State Representative Sidney Mathias and Lake County Board Chairman David Stolman. District 96 Board of Education members Marc Tepper, Renee Klass, Liz Dietz, Lauren Gordon and John Rouleau also made their way through the course along with several D96 administrators, principals teachers and staff.

The Buffalo Grove Police and Fire Departments assisted in planning the course and were on hand to make sure everything ran smoothly. Student volunteers from Stevenson High School’s G.I.V.E. program were stationed throughout the course and the District 96 custodial staff provided support in preparing for the event at Twin Groves.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better all-around event,” said Superintendent Schmidt. “It was a fantastic time and a great opportunity to promote physical fitness and raise funds to support 21st century technology in all our classrooms.”
