Wanted: Some Happy Old Guys

Group offers retirees a chance to make new friends and broaden interests.

Happy Old Guys, a group of senior men who are no longer fully committed to their work and careers, seeks new members who wish to enhance their lives through new
friends and activities. Members come from a wide backgrounds, including teachers, physicians, executives and salesmen.

HOGs includes members from Buffalo Grove, Arlington Heights, Lincolnshire, and Wheeling and is open to any men regardless of location. The non-sectarian group provides the opportunity for each member to inaugurate and participate in a wide variety of activities, indoor or outdoor, and anywhere they agree to go. HOGs, which started last fall, currently has 40 members and is looking to add more guys who want to enjoy life more now.

Recent activities included:

  • Tour of Board of Trade and Federal Reserve Bank.
  • Docent led tour of Holocaust Museum with survivor as speaker.
  • Tour of Harley-Davidson Milwaukee Power Train Plant.
  • Bar-B-Q cooking class at Sunset Foods, Long Grove.
  • Apple/Mac products presentation, Deer Park


Upcoming activities include:

  • Segway tour of Millennium Park.
  • Chicago architecture boat and land tours.
  • 2-day tour of Springfield.
  • Charter fishing on Lake Michigan.


There are also regularly scheduled groups for golfers and poker players. Other groups are formed based on interests of members.

Activities are planned at monthly meetings held at the Buffalo Grove Community Center, 50 ½ Raupp Blvd. Many meetings include speakers with topics ranging from investment money managers to coverage of first trial of Rod Blagojevich.
