Trendy or Traditional? The Top Baby Names of 2011

The government has released a list of popular names for its newest citizens.

When it comes to baby names, is your taste trendy, or do you prefer names off the beaten path?

According to the Social Security Administration, the most popular baby names in 2011 were Jacob and Sophia. Other boy names in the top five were Mason, William, Jayden and Noah, while parents opted for Isabella (the most popular girl’s name in 2009 and 2010), Emma, Olivia and Ava.

Rounding out the top 10 for boys were Michael, Ethan, Alexander, Aiden and Daniel. Popular picks for girls were Emily, Abigail, Madison, Mia and Chloe.

Pop culture may play a role in the rise in popularity of some other names last year, The Christian Science Monitor observed. Briella, Kate and Brantley were among the names that saw a jump in popularity last year.
