UPDATED: Power Restoration Continues In Buffalo Grove

More than five days after losing power, homes and businesses remain without electricity.

Target on Lake-Cook Road in Wheeling had its power restored today, after running on generators since Monday, employees said. The generators supplied enough power to keep the store open through the week, but were not strong enough to keep the freezer and refrigerator cases cold. All perishables were removed from the cases, which employees are beginning to restock today. They said a full selection is expected to be available by Monday.

Meanwhile, a employee said the Buffalo Grove store, which did not lose power, experienced higher than usual sales this week.

Power restoration continued Wednesday afternoon in Buffalo Grove, where businesses, homes and traffic lights are slowly blinking back to life.

ComEd crews restored electricity today in neighborhoods at the north end of the village, near Aptakisic Road and Route 22, Deputy Village Manager Ghida Neukirch said.

Residents in the Villa Verde and Oak Creek complexes and those near Dundee and Weidner roads are expected to have power again by the end of the day, she said.

“There’s a high concentration of residents in those areas, so those were considered high priority for Buffalo Grove,” Neukirch said. “There are still a number of customers that are still out of service as of this afternoon, but customers are being restored on a regular basis.”

Traffic signals were still out Wednesday afternoon at the intersections Buffalo Grove Road and Aptakisic, as well as on Dundee Road at both Weidner and Arlington Heights roads, causing major backups as drivers negotiated four-way stops. The storm knocked out power at six intersections in the village. Neukirch said most traffic signals are expected to be restored by this evening.

Power has been restored to about 62 percent of ComEd customers in the village, she said, including , which got its electricity back today.

Shopping centers, including Aptakisic Creek at Aptakisic and Buffalo Grove roads and stores in the Plaza Verde at Dundee and Arlington Heights roads also lost power in the storm. Many were open this afternoon, while others remained dark.
