Help Fight Cancer by Joining Buffalo Grove's Relay for Life

The Relay for Life of Buffalo Grove/Stevenson High School will be held June 14. The event is open to the entire community.

“Even if you haven't been personally affected by cancer, everyone who signs up to take part in this event makes a difference!”

Those are the words of Stevenson High School sophomore Delaney Weiland, who is among the volunteers on the Buffalo Grove/Stevenson High School Relay for Life committee.

The event, which will be held June 14 at Buffalo Grove High School, is open to the public. Everyone is encouraged to form a team or join an existing one. Local cancer survivors are also invited to walk the survivor lap or register as fundraisers. The money raised by the event benefits the American Cancer Society.

Registration is $10. Participants are encouraged to raise at least $100, but many collect much more. To date, the 17 members of team Chemosaurus Rex have collected more than $23,000 in donations. The six members of the Village of Buffalo Grove team have raised more than $1,000 so far.

Teams also include groups of high school students, adults, businesses and organizations, such as Hope Lutheran Church.

“You can join a team, you can form a team, you can donate,” Buffalo Grove Village Clerk Janet Sirabian said at a Village Board meeting this month. She is among the registered participants.

As of May 16, 259 participants had formed 47 teams and raised more than $37,000 in donations, which will benefit the American Cancer Society. Registration remains open on the event's website.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. June 14 with an opening ceremony and laps around the track. Participants can walk for as long as they choose. Relay for Life events also feature onsite fundraisers, music and other entertainment. The event will conclude at 8 a.m. June 15, but participants are not required to stay all night.

Luminarias can be purchased online for $10 in honor or in memory of someone who has been touched by cancer. The bags will be illuminated during a ceremony at the event in recognition of those who have won and lost their cancer battles.

Visit the Relay for Life of Buffalo Grove/Stevenson High School website to register, get more information or to make an online donation on behalf of an individual participant or team.
