Earth Day Celebration Tips from ComEd

Here are some things you can do to save electricity.

In conjunction with Earth Day, ComEd is encouraging customers to commit to saving electricity and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Customers can better manage their energy usage by adopting simple habits, such as the following:

  • Turning off unneeded lights
  • Planting trees near air conditioners
  • Running dishwashers only when full
  • Cleaning air conditioner filters monthly
  • Researching appliances prior to making purchases
  • Considering Energy Star-approved products, such as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), to help minimize energy usage. CFLs consume about 75 percent less energy and last about 10 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs.
  • Investing in programmable thermostats that automatically adjust home temperatures.
  • Unplugging unused devices
  • Putting computers in sleep mode when they are not in use
  • Using power strips to turn off unused electronic items
  • Keeping refrigerator coils clean
  • Recycling refrigerators. ComEd offers a recycling program that will give customers $50 for their old, inefficient refrigerators, including free pickup.
