ComEd Underground Cable Replacement in Progress

The electric company is making improvements in Buffalo Grove and surrounding towns.

Underground cable replacement is underway in Buffalo Grove and surrounding areas as ComEd works to reduce the frequency and duration of outages.

According to ComEd, residents of Buffalo Grove, Vernon Township, Arlington Heights and Lincolnshire will be among those who benefit from the improvements, which are scheduled to be completed by January.

  • Buffalo Grove: The replacement of more than 7,400 feet of underground cable near 900 E. Deerfield Parkway in Buffalo Grove as well as in Vernon Township. About 90 customers will benefit from the replacement.
  • Vernon Township: The replacement of 325 feet of underground cable near 23666 N. Kingston Row in Vernon Township. About 10 customers will benefit from the replacement.
  • Arlington Heights: The replacement of about 17,900 feet of underground cable in five parts of the village.
  • Lincolnshire: The replacement of more than 750 feet of underground cable.

Additional work in northern Illinois will begin in January as part of ComEd’s implementation of the Energy Infrastructure Modernization Act recently enacted by the General Assembly. The company will invest $1.3 billion to strengthen the existing power grid serving northern Illinois by replacing thousands of miles of cable and poles, and upgrading substations and equipment.

The company will spend another $1.3 billion to digitize the electric system, including distribution automation devices that will automatically reroute power around a problem; install a smart meter in every home and utilize other Smart Grid technologies.

The investments are expected to help ComEd reduce outages and help save customers money.

According to the electric company, ComEd has invested about $10 billion in its electric system over the past decade, reducing service interruptions by nearly 40 percent.
