Arlington Heights Factory Explosion Kills 1, Injures 10

Firefighters responded to an explosion at Arens Controls, 3602 N. Kennicott Ave., in Arlington Heights.

A machine exploded inside an Arlington Heights manufacturing company on the 3600 block of North Kennicott Avenue Tuesday morning, killing one person and injuring 10 others, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Firefighters responded to a call of an explosion around 9 a.m. at Arens Controls, a company that manufactures and tests electrical parts. According to CBS Chicago, the explosion occured in the back of the building and early reports show it may have caused by a bad chemical reaction.

A Buffalo Grove police officer was among those taken to the hospital due to respiratory problems from the smoke, the Daily Herald reported.

Arlington Heights Police Cmdr. Andrew Whowell told Patch that police are investigating the explosion alongside fire officials.

“There is no health risk and everything is secure,” Whowell said.

The building was evacuated and employees were sent home for the day.
