January 2014 Students of the Month Congratulated by Buffalo Grove High School

Buffalo Grove High School has selected six students, one from each academic division, to be honored as the January 2014 Students of the Month.

Senior Joseph Scipione of Wheeling was nominated by automotive teacher Sean Murrin as the Career Technology Education department’s honoree. "Joe is a third-year student in the Vocational Auto class,” Murrin said.  “I have had the pleasure of watching him grow into a responsible young man, ready to move forward with his life.  While in class Joe works on individual projects to further his problem solving skills and increase his automotive knowledge.  He has taken a leadership role in class and helps the other students any way he can."

The World Languages/Social Sciences/English Language Learners division has chosen sophomore Caitlyn Anderson of Arlington Heights. Teacher Caili Chiu said, "As a Chinese 2 student, Caitlyn has a great control of the language. Not only is her Chinese handwriting neat and beautiful, but her understanding as well as her communication skills in Chinese are equally amazing. Caitlyn displays leadership skills in group work and assists her classmates with an enthusiastic attitude.  She possesses the following exemplary qualities as a student, as well as a wonderful individual: an eagerness and readiness to learn, attentiveness to ensure full understanding of the materials, and a diligent work ethnic to complete all her assignments above and beyond expectations.”

His ‘can-do’ attitude makes him a leader in the classroom."

The Physical Education/Health/Driver's Education department selected junior Hailey Hernandez of Buffalo Grove to be recognized this month. Physical Education teacher Tim Roe said, "Hailey is in the Net Sports phase of our P.E. curriculum.  She is energetic and enthusiastic and participates at a high level on a daily basis.  Hailey provides leadership to the class via her actions and her positive attitude. She succeeds because she takes on the responsibility and opportunity to work to her full potential."

Senior Joseph Baron of Wheeling is the Math/Science honoree. Advanced Placement biology teacher Nancy Conlin said, "Joseph has (achieved) over 100 percent in the class, is extremely conscientious, and his class participation is excellent.  His main goal in class is to have a complete understanding of all concepts; his outstanding grade comes with that full understanding.”

Student Services has named junior Michael Solito of Wheeling as Student of the Month.  Individual Resource teachers Jamie Lala and Amy Silverman commented, "Michael is a very conscientious, hard-working student, whose success has moved him into a more challenging English class this semester. He is very respectful, always on task, and is a good participant in class.  Michael's hard work pays off in other areas as well, as he is involved in the Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps and is on the swim team.  Michael is truly a pleasure to have in class."
