District 214 WildStang Robotics Team Captures Awards

Township High School District 214’s WildStang Robotics Team is part of an alliance that took first place in the FIRST Technical Challenge Competition (FTC) at the Chicago Math and Science Academy earlier this month. The team, named MiniStang, also earned the Engineering Quality Award and took third place for their Engineering Notebook and presentation. 

Twenty-five Illinois teams participated in the FTC. The three teams in the winning alliance were the Beastie Bots from Highland Park, Animatores Romani from Chicago Latin School, and the WildStang Robotics Team representing Rolling Meadows, Prospect, and Wheeling high schools.

MiniStang designed their robot in a CAD (computer-aided design) class, then built and programmed the robot to compete. During the “Block Party” competition, robots picked up plastic blocks and deposited them in baskets for points. Additional points were earned if the robot hung from a bar at the end of the match.

MiniStang participants include Prospect sophomores Veronica Boratyn, Billy Doherty, Chris Endres, Zoe McRae, and junior Teddy Reimann; Rolling Meadows sophomores Tim Bouraoui, Josh Gustafson, and juniors Ben Schreiber and Nathan Walters; and Wheeling junior Naomi Carmeli-Shabtay.

MiniStang will now compete at the state meet in February. Winners at the state competition will advance to the World Championship in St. Louis in April.
