Buffalo Grove Students to Attend Black Teen Symposium

Buffalo Grove High School students will join others from the north and northwest Chicago suburbs in attending Harper College’s “Tribute to Leaders: Black Teen Symposium” on Friday, Feb. 21.  The annual summit addresses the growing concerns of African-American high school students about the future and their quest for higher education. The event will offer attendees information on college admissions, financial aid, empowerment workshops, college readiness, and transition to college, as well as a panel discussion with current black college students.

The cost-free symposium presents students with positive role models, allows them to discuss contemporary issues with their peers, instills a pride in their heritage, and creates a culture of success by working with other black students who are high academic achievers.

Harper’s first Black Teen Summit took place in 2003.  In 2009, a group of Buffalo Grove High School students and their counselor chaperones attended the event for the first time.  This year, counselor Jill Hamilton and English teacher Ami Relf will accompany 10-15 students.

Hamilton commented, “I hope this symposium helps students evaluate their current situation, become aware of available resources, seek out and take advantage of different opportunities, realize their leadership potential, and speak to a panel of students and professionals.“
