Buffalo Grove High School Congratulates Its Students of the Month

Buffalo Grove High School has selected six students, one from each academic division, to be honored as the September 2013 Student of the Month.

Senior Courtney Smith of Arlington Heights was nominated as the honoree of the Career Technology Education department by Preschool Practicum teacher, Corinne Ginder. "Courtney is an excellent role model for the children," said Ginder. "She shows up for her morning job with the preschoolers with a smile on her face. Courtney is very patient when she needs to be, but also lovingly disciplines the children. Her calm, soothing voice creates a comfort level for the children that is always welcome. She can anticipate before a problem arises, or a child needs help. She will be greatly missed (when she graduates) next year."

The World Languages/Social Sciences/English Language Learners division has chosen junior Melissa Boyd of Wheeling. History teacher Lisa McCullough said, "Though we have only had a few weeks of school, Melissa shows great enthusiasm and a passion for learning in U.S. History. She is always well prepared for class and is often a leader in class discussions. Melissa sets high expectations for herself and strives to perform well on class assessments."

Senior Brian McCallister of Buffalo Grove is Student of the Month for English/Fine Arts.  Director of Bands Ed Jacobi nominated him for the honor with the comment, "Brian has been an outstanding student in our vocal and band departments since his freshman year. This year he is a leader in both areas. In addition to commitments in Concert Choir, The Expressions, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Band, he is also studying AP Music Theory and Instrumental Ensemble. Brian's passions are singing and being a percussionist, and he is driven to excel at the highest level possible. He also is quick to volunteer for anything where help is needed. It is great pride that we, as a Music Department, select him for this honor."

The Physical Education/Health/Driver's Education department selected junior Jesus Maldonado of Wheeling to be recognized this month. Physical Education teacher Tim Miller said, "Jesus approaches P.E. class on a daily basis with an effort that is second to none. His passion for exercise and living a healthy lifestyle is a great example for his fellow classmates. Jesus is one of the hardest working students I have ever had as an educator, and it is a pleasure to have him in class and a joy to watch him work, on a daily basis."

Senior Daniel Borsuk of Arlington Heights is the math/science honoree. Advanced Placement Chemistry teacher Andy Park said, "Daniel is blazing the way with his expert use of iPad applications in the chemistry class and lab. The quality of his lab write-ups is unmatched, as well as his understanding of the nuances that make such a format possible. As District 214 moves towards a 1:1 deployment of iPads, I will continue to use Daniel as a resource to aid my understanding of how students can efficiently and effectively use technology in a chemistry lab environment."

Student Services has named sophomore Ryan Lawson of Wheeling as Student of the Month.  Individual Resource teacher John Morton commented, "In my World Literature class, Ryan is a consistent worker and follows all classroom expectations without a second thought. In addition, he has gone above and beyond to help other students in the classroom who were having difficulty with their iPads by setting up keyboards and helping to create log-ins. He has proven to be a model student in the classroom."
