Jacquelin Camacho and Shelby Soto, juniors at Wheeling High School, were selected to attend the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign campus on Thursday, May 2, for a day of fun and learning about college and language translation.  They were accompanied by their Spanish teachers, Maria Rivas and Rebecca Castro, respectively.

The Illinois High School Translation Competition is co-sponsored by the University of Illinois European Union Center and the Center for Translation Studies.  This competition, open to all high schools, offered the opportunity to translate a designated text from the 23 European Union languages.  Camacho and Soto translated a Spanish text into English.  Wheeling High School was one in a field of 25 schools selected to compete at the event.

Camacho and Soto will be able to explore a growing field that can lead to exciting job opportunities that require language skills, sharpen their translation and interpretation knowledge and abilities, and network with other students who speak more than one language.
