District 214 School Board Approves Administrative Appointments

Two Administrators Receive Change in Status

 

                  The Township High School District 214 Board of Education has approved a change in status for Kurt Laakso, interim associate superintendent for human resources, to associate superintendent for human resources and Michelle Dowling, interim principal at Prospect High School, to principal at Prospect High School. The title change for both is effective immediately.

            The school board also approved several administrative appointments at its meeting Thursday night. Scott McDermott, interim associate principal for instruction at Prospect High School, has been named associate principal at Prospect; Thomas Scotese, dean at John Hersey High School, was named assistant principal at Wheeling High School; and Thomas Smith, social science teacher at John Hersey High School, has been named social science/world language division head at Hersey.  All appointments are effective July 1, 2013.

            A veteran educator, McDermott has nearly 20 years of special education experience, including three as a special education division head. He taught special education at Miner School and Glenbrook South High School before joining District 214 in 2009 as special education division head. He was appointed to his current position earlier this school year after Dowling was appointed Interim Principal at Prospect. McDermott received a bachelor's degree in Special Education from Northern Illinois University, and a master's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in Curriculum & Instruction from National Louis University.

            Scotese began his educational career teaching in the Bilingual Hearing Impaired Program at Chicago's Benito Juarez High School in 1986. Six years later he became a bilingual social worker at Elgin High School, and in 1994, a social worker at Wheeling High School. He also served as an adjunct professor at North Park University for three years teaching policies and procedures in special education, counseling skills for teachers, and diversity in education. He assumed his current position as a dean at Hersey in 2006. Scotese has a bachelor's degree in Deaf Education from Illinois State University and a master's degree in Social Work from the University of Illinois, Jane Adams School of Social Work.

            A seasoned educator, Smith has taught social science courses for 15 years teaching at Prairie Ridge High School in Crystal Lake, Elk Grove High School, and John Hersey High School. He received a bachelor's degree in Secondary Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from North Central College, and a master's degree in Educational Leadership from Northeastern Illinois University.
