Haley Nettles of Arlington Heights, a junior at Buffalo Grove High School, participated in the Harper Challenge on May 17 at Harper College. The high school competitive event is designed to emphasize skill requirements for the fashion industry and is open to high school fashion designers from Districts 211, 214, and 220 (Barrington High School). The event took place in the Performing Arts Center at Harper's main campus, just before the annual Harper Fashion Show, which showcases Harper College designers.
Nettles, a three-year Fashion Design student at BGHS, placed second in the Creativity category over many worthy competitors, which earned her a monetary award, certificate and trophy for her school to display.
In her first time on a runway at her first fashion competition, Nettles modeled her dress, constructed of stretch poplin in teal blue with a cream colored, three-tiered ruffle around the neckline. According to Nettles, the garment can be easily dressed up or down, depending on how it's accessorized.
In response to her placement in the Creativity category, Nettles commented, "I've always had a creative brain. I guess the judges liked what I made and how I modeled it."
Upon graduation, Nettles plans to attend college where she will study fashion design in hopes of pursuing a career in the field.
