Buffalo Grove Honors Its March 2013 Students of Month

Buffalo Grove High School has chosen Students of the Month for March 2013, with selections

     Buffalo Grove High School has chosen Students of the Month for March 2013, with selections based on the efforts and contributions of one student in each of the six divisions of the school.    

     Junior Allison Panzarella of Arlington Heights was nominated as English/Fine Arts Student of the Month by choral director Debora Utley. "Alli is a quiet leader who leads by example," said Utley.  "She is a very talented and intelligent musician and a member of every choir she can be: Concert Choir, Expressions Show Choir, Chamber Choir and 'By Popular Demand' Vocal Jazz Ensemble.  I am so very fortunate to have Alli in my program!"

     Freshman Anna Sandler of Buffalo Grove was nominated by Spanish teacher Gina Douvris as the World Languages/Social Science/English Language Learners Student of the Month. "Anna is an excellent student who deserves to be recognized for her outstanding performance in Spanish 2," said Douvris.  "Her written work is exemplary as she incorporates new vocabulary and grammar topics with ease in her writing. Anna takes an interest in the language and makes connections between past topics and new topics. She asks very perceptive questions that show her interest in furthering her knowledge of the language. In addition, she is a participation leader in her class and is always ready to answer even the hardest questions. Anna is hardworking, a model student, and an asset to class."

     Junior Colleen Duffy of Arlington Heights is Student of the Month for Student Services.  "Colleen has been a model student from the get go," said Individual Resource teacher Kevin Schrammel. "She is the first to volunteer in class and always has positive staff and peer relations.  Colleen has also taken of a leadership role with the junior iPad pilot, working on a proposal for successful students to have further opportunities. She also presented to the National School Board on her progress with the use of her iPad. Colleen has continued to grow as a student who advocates for her needs and works hard in all of her academic classes. She took the initiative to find a job on her own, has achieved amazing growth, and demonstrates consistency in her efforts."

     The Math/Science department recognized junior Karla Rivera of Wheeling for her achievements. Physics teacher Kevin Trow commented, "Karla has shown very high levels of engagement with the material and has become quite a role model for her fellow classmates, as she is often asking questions and offering answers to the questions that are posed.  She is an absolute pleasure to have in class, as she is always cheerful, helpful, and attentive."

     Career and Technical Education selected junior Colleen Zickert of Arlington Heights as the department's honoree.  Graphic arts teacher Sara Cleveland said, "Colleen excels in the world of graphic design. Her ideas are original and innovative. Colleen's ticket design was chosen to be printed for the 2013 Buffalo Grove Turnabout Dance.  It is always exciting to see what she comes up with whenever the class starts a new project. Colleen is able to execute her vision for each project with extreme precision and attention to detail. It is not just her work that shines, she has an electric personality and is a joy to have in class."

     Senior Alyssa Mills of Arlington Heights has been named the Physical Education/Health/ Driver's Education Student of the Month. Physical Education teacher Tim Miller commented, "Alyssa has been a hard working dedicated student athlete here all four years.  She is doing a tremendous job of mentoring our young athletes in class and leading by example on a daily basis. She has a very positive attitude and shows up to P.E. every day to work and improve.  From a character standpoint, Alyssa represents the model we would like all our student athletes to display."
