Constitution Day: Sente Seeks Equal Rights Amendment

State Rep. Carol Sente co-sponsored the Equal Rights Amendment to the US Constitution Monday. The Amendment prohibits discrimination based on sex and would be the 28th amendment to the Constitution.

State Rep. Carol Sente (D-Vernon Hills) co-sponsored the Equal Rights Amendment to the United States Constitution Monday. The Amendment, which prohibits discrimination based on gender, would be the 28th amendment to the United States Constitution and has already been ratified by 35 states, three short of the approval necessary for passage.

“I can think of no better way to honor our Constitution this Constitution Day than by joining the effort to ratify this Amendment and ensure that equal opportunity is available to all, regardless of gender,” Sente said. “We have made significant progress on equal rights over the years, that progress is still under attack, and our Constitution still lacks a declaration that the rights it guarantees are held by all citizens regardless of sex. It is time for that to change.”

Sente, who is one of only 38 women in the Illinois House of Representatives, has been a strong supporter of women’s issues, most recently helping to block legislation when social conservatives fast-tracked bills through the conservative Agriculture & Conservation Committee to restrict women’s access to health care. Her efforts have also recently earned her the endorsement of Planned Parenthood Illinois Action.
