Brady PAC-Illinois Endorses State Rep. Carol Sente

The Brady PAC-Illinois, the state’s largest gun control advocacy group, has announced its endorsement of me for State Representative.

“Carol Sente understands that sensible gun laws are needed to keep our families safe,” says Tom Vanden Berk, Chairman of the Brady PAC-IL. “Too many tragic shootings involve legally-purchased weapons that would not have been sold if common-sense regulations had been in place. Carol has shown herself to be a leader on public safety issues and she shares the Brady PAC-IL’s commitment to criminal background checks on all gun sales and banning the sale of military-style assault weapons, including AK-47s and UZIs.”

Semi-automatic assault weapons are commonly used in violent shootings, such as July’s movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado and August’s shooting at a Sikh Temple near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Both shootings involved legally purchased guns. In addition to background checks and a ban on assault weapons, I have also sponsored legislation to prohibit large capacity ammunition clips, such as those that were used in the Colorado shooting and are designed to inflict injury.

I am honored to receive the Brady PAC- IL’s endorsement for my efforts to promote responsible gun legislation and keep our community safe. While I support the rights of gun ownership, we must also have common-sense regulations in place to ensure dangerous weapons and accessories are not easily accessible to those who should not have them.

Between 2005 and 2010, the Illinois Department of Corrections saw a 25% increase in violent crime admissions from Lake County. We cannot take our safety for granted, and I will continue working closely with local police chiefs on public safety issues and law enforcement legislation to keep our communities safe.
