Veterans to Share Stories at Charity Book Fair

Event will raise money for Honor Flight Chicago.

Thirty veterans from World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam wars, will tell their stories during a April 30 book fair that will raise money for Honor Flight Chicago, which flies veterans to Washington, D.C., to be honored for their service and dedication to preserving freedom. 

The book fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Barnes and Noble, 920 Milwaukee Ave., Lincolnshire. It is sponsored by two clubs, Partners for Success and Students Helping Soldiers, in partnership with veterans from the Sedgebrook retirement community.

Barnes and Noble will donate up to 15 percent of sales to Honor Flight Chicago when the organization is mentioned. Barnes and Noble also will donate a percentage of online book sales made at its website, www.bn.com, from April 30 through May 6. Purchasers will need to type 10438935 in the coupon code area.

In addition to the book fair, there will be several events throughout the day:

  • 9:30-11:30 a.m. Story time for children: Stevenson students will read the newest children’s stories. Babysitting will be provided in the store for shoppers with children.
  • 9:30-11:30 a.m. Fire truck and tattoos for kids: Representatives of the
  • Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District will have a fire truck at the store, and also will provide free, washable tattoos for children.
  • 1-4:30 p.m. Living history sessions: World War II, Korea and Vietnam veterans will share their stories in small-group settings throughout the store. One veteran is a retired Navy captain, while the other worked on the Manhattan Project.
  • 1:30-2:30 p.m. Robert Kurson, author of Shadow Diver, a non-fiction book about an enemy submarine found off the coast of New Jersey during World War II, will speak. Autographed copies of the book will be available.
  • 3:30-4:30 p.m. Danette Hayes, author of 400 Days, will speak and sign copies of her book. 400 Days chronicles the challenges and changes experienced by the author’s family when her husband was activated and deployed by the National Guard in 2001.
  •  7-8:30 p.m. Chamber music: Stevenson orchestra members will perform.


Those unable to attend the book fair or make an online purchase, but who want to make a donation to Honor Flight Chicago, can write a check to “SHS-Honor Flight Chicago” and send it to Vickie Saunders at the high school. The school’s address is 1 Stevenson Drive, Lincolnshire, IL 60069.
