Sente Encourages Support of Small Businesses

More money is returned to the community when spent at small businesses.

With the holiday shopping season about to begin in earnest, State Rep. Carol Sente (D-Vernon Hills) is stressing the importance of supporting small businesses in the community to promote economic development.  Sente is encouraging shoppers to participate in the second annual Small Business Saturday, which will take place on Nov. 26.

Small Business Saturday began last year as a way to boost the economic impact of the busiest shopping weekend of the year.

“Small businesses play an important role in our communities and drive the economy,” Sente said. “As a small business owner, I’m especially attuned to the difficulties associated with competing against large corporations. This struggle is brought to the forefront during holiday shopping, when large corporations use all their leverage to pull shoppers into their stores.”

The 3/50 Project notes that for every $100 spent at local, independent businesses, $68 is returned to the community. By comparison, only $43 is returned to the community when that money is spent at a national chain, and nothing returns to the community if that money is spent online.

“The best way to improve the local economy is to spend money nearby,” Sente said. “Shopping at small businesses not only keeps that money local, but it also supports the most important job creators in the nation.”
