Bumbo Seats Recalled for Fall Hazard

A popular baby seat is being recalled after many infant injuries were reported, including those as serious as skull fractures.

Four million Bumbo baby seats were voluntarily recalled by Bumbo International Trust on Aug. 15. Babies can wiggle out of the chairs, causing serious injury. This isn’t he first recall the company has issued. In October 2007, one million of the seats were recalled to provide warnings against using the seats on raised surfaces like tables and countertops.

At least 50 incidents where babies fell from the seat while being used on a raised surface have been reported since the 2007 recall. Nineteen of those incidents resulted in skull injuries. Additionally, 34 incidents have been reported where babies were injured while using the seat on the floor.

Those who own a Bumbo chair are advised to stop using it until a free repair kit is sent to them and installed. The kit includes a restraint belt with a warning label, installation instructions, safe use instructions and a warning sticker.

The recalled seats were sold at various retailers for between $30 and $50 between August 2003 through August 2012.
