A Look at School Registration Fees in Buffalo Grove

Here's a look at what it costs to register a child for public school in the districts serving Buffalo Grove.

When it comes time to register children for school, parents are required to fork over fees to Buffalo Grove-area public schools.

Those fees vary by school district, grade level and even individual classes.

Local parents chimed in about those fees recently on Buffalo Grove Patch’s Facebook page

“ I have always found it ‘interesting’ that we have to pay a fee for the free public education all our children are supposed to receive,” one parent wrote.

“Compared to private school it is a bargain. Some of the school supplies are ridiculous. Kleenex and hand sanitizer are two items the school should just get,” another parent suggested.

Here’s a look at the required and optional fees charged by public schools serving Buffalo Grove.

Stevenson High School

All Stevenson High School students are charged a $300 textbook fee. Freshmen pay an additional $35 for equipment, which covers a gym uniform, student handbook and science fee.

Some optional fees include $60 for a parking permit for each grading period (students are allowed to park on campus for up to five of the six grading periods); $300 for driver’s education, $75 for a sports boosters membership; $42 for a yearbook; $30 for a video yearbook; $25 for an activity ticket and $20 for PPA membership.

Buffalo Grove, Wheeling High Schools

Registration for the 2013-14 school year is $460, though those who registered by July 31 got a discounted rate of $435. Seniors pay an additional $40.

Optional fees include a $65 co-curricular fee, which covers all sports, activities and clubs for the year; $350 for driver’s education; $190 for a student parking permit; $50 for a yearbook; $35 for a family athletic pass; and various other fees for PTO or booster club memberships and for families who want the student newspaper mailed to their homes.

District 21

Registration is $47 for kindergartners attending District 21 schools. The fee increases to $57 for first- through fifth-graders.

Middle school registration is the highest in the district. Parents pay $98 to register sixth-, seventh and eighth-graders. The price includes a $35 lab fee. 

District 96

Registration fees vary by grade level. This year it is $60 for kindergartners, $80 for first- through fourth-graders, $90 for fifth-graders, $155 for sixth-graders (the fee includes a $50 technology fee) and $105 for seventh- and eighth-graders.

Parents who registered their children before May 17 received a $20 discount per child. Optional fees include $40 for middle school participation, $7 for a districtwide directory, and $18 or $20 for a middle school yearbook at Twin Groves or Woodlawn, respectively. 

District 102

The district has not responded to requests from Patch for this information.

District 103

Fees begin at $87 for early childhood students and half-day kindergartners at Sprague School, where the price includes a general registration fee, tech fee and classroom projects fee. Registration jumps to $3,350 for parents who opt for the full-day kindergarten program.

Registration is $120 for first- and second-graders at Sprague. Fees increase slightly for older children. Third-graders at Half Day School are $143, which includes a recorder. Fourth-grade fees are $137. At Daniel Wright, registration is $153 for fifth- and sixth-graders, $169 for seventh-graders and $190 for eighth-graders, whose fee includes a graduation gown.

The fees do not include middle school gym uniforms. Parents can also pay extra to join the PTO or order a yearbook.
