District 214 to Hold 'Almost Idol' Competition

Singing contest is open to all District 214 residents sixth grade and older.

Last May, more 100 community members, including current American Idol contestant vied for top honors in the first-ever "D214 Almost Idol" competition. The John Hersey High School Fine Arts Department is now looking for a new group of singers to showcase their talents and be named this year's D214 Almost Idol champion.

The preliminary rounds, to be held on May 14, will be open to anyone who lives, works or attends school in the District 214 attendance area. Contestants will compete in three age categories: sixth- through eighth grade, high school and post-high school. A panel of judges will decide who moves on to the final rounds, to be held on May 20 and 21. Winners will be decided by 50 percent judges vote and 50 percent fan vote. The top three in each category will win cash prizes.

Guidelines, rules and registration sheets are available on-line at the Fine Arts section of Hersey's webpage, from any District 214 school's music department, or at John Hersey High School, 1900 E. Thomas, Arlington Heights.

Performers of all ages are encouraging to seize the opportunity to step into the spotlight and impress family members, neighbors, and all of District 214.

"Instead of just sitting and watching others sing their way to fame and fortune," said Kyle Marquette, Hersey Fine and Performing Arts Coordinator, "pull out the sheet music, start working on those high notes, and become the second D214 Almost Idol champion."
