Buffalo Grove Encore Group Sings In The Rain

Handed inflatable guitars, two residents "rocked" before the rain.

While the recent heat and humidity have been frontrunners in disrupting outdoor events, it was the rain that won out Tuesday evening, forcing an early end to a free summer concert at Sun City’s Fountain View Amphitheater in Huntley.

Several passes of light rain had forewarned both the 25-member and concertgoers before a steadier rain ended the show nearly 10 minutes early. During one of the light rain spells, BGES's conductor Linda Rosen joked to the crowd that the group would not perform "Singin' In the Rain," only to be interrupted later while performing Simon and Garfunkel’s "Bridge over Troubled Water," which turned out to be the concert finale.

Because BGES stopped during "Bridge," Sun City residents did not get to hear in its entirety the song that earned BGES entry into the 2011 Sing.com contest, a nationwide vocal competition. Backed by the Deer Park Town Center, BGES is hoping to earn enough online votes to win $20,000 for its favorite charity. The group began the concert in first place.

In addition to "Bridge," BGES also performed “The Way You Look Tonight," "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," "At Last" and other classics.

BGES, which has performed at the retirement community twice previously, also sang a selection from the musical "Brigadoon" and the Neil Diamond favorite "Sweet Caroline."

For Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer," Rosen provided Sun City residents Sidney Cohen and Jack Neven with inflatable electric guitars and persuaded the men to pretend they were playing them.

The concert was sponsored by Wells Fargo of Huntley.
