Whiz Kids: Sharon Burke and Rebecca Zelikson

Patch Whiz Kids of the Week

Whiz Kid’s Names: Sharon Burke, 14, and Rebecca Zelikson, 14

Whiz Kids Schools: Twin Groves Middle School (Sharon) and Woodlawn Middle School (Rebecca)

Whiz Kids Accomplishment: Rebecca and Sharon will be trying out for Team Chicago Soccer for the JCC Maccabi Games 2011. The Maccabi games, an Olympic-style competition geared toward Jewish teenagers between the ages of 13-16, give Jewish teenagers from around the globe an opportunity to meet, socialize, do charity projects as well as compete against each other in various team and individual sports. The two girls played together last summer in Denver and Girls Team Chicago made the final four for the first time in 10 years.

Whiz Kids' Key to Awesomeness: Rebecca and Sharon’s parents have been cheering on opposite sides since their daughters began playing soccer in kindergarten. Rebecca and Sharon are intense rivals on the soccer field; currently, Rebecca plays for Ela-U14 and Sharon plays for GLSA-U14. They have battled it out on the soccer fields on numerous occasions; however, they put their rivalry aside to happily unite when representing Chicago in the Maccabi Games. Despite having been sports rivals, Rebecca and Sharon look forward to the possibility of uniting on the same team again in the 2011 Maccabi Games, with tryouts coming up this month. They will both attend Stevenson High School next year and plan to try out for the soccer team there. Rebecca and Sharon are committed to their sports, academics, and community service, and have strong time-management skills in order to balance it all.
