Whiz Kid: Lora Lewis

Patch Whiz Kid of the Week

Name: Lora Lewis, 7

School: Laura B. Sprague Elementary School

Accomplishment: April sure was Lora’s month! On April 9, on her 7th birthday, Lora collected bags of food items for the from her friends in lieu of birthday presents. She had an "Around the World" themed party and asked friends to bring “international" and "domestic” nonperishable food; thanks to the generosity of her friends she had two shopping carts filled with food to donate. On top of that, at the end of April, Lora was recognized in front of her first-grade peers as she was selected as a runner-up in the District 103 PTO Directory Cover drawing contest. The contest was for children in grades K-8 with one winner and a runner up in each of the three district school buildings. As if that was not enough, Lora was then honored at her school for being one of the top fundraisers for the Sprague School Walk for Diabetes, raising $910 from family, friends and neighbors. The author of this article sure is proud of her daughter!

Key to Awesomeness: Lora has learned the value of giving, learning from a very young age the importance giving to and helping others as a way to gain perspective on the world, better understand people and make a contribution to the greater good. She composed a letter to requesting donations to help support people with diabetes, then came up with the idea to start her own business, “Art Girl,” drawing pictures and selling them to her neighbors for donations for her charity walk. Lora has selflessly requested donations for the local food pantry from her friends, giving up birthday gifts. She receives a weekly charity allowance and saves the money until she has enough to contribute to a cause about which she feels passionate. While Lora has received some tangible rewards for her awesomeness, nothing compares to the pride she feels for doing the best she can for herself and others.
