There's A New Pie In Town

Long Grove friends go from sipping coffee together to starting a pie business.

Move over cupcakes, there’s something new in town that’s keeping our taste buds tickled; they’re called pies.

Yes, the comfort of homemade pies are being miniaturized, baked and sold from a Long Grove duo, Amy Huber and Mary Hwang.

Their friendship began back in 2004 when their kids attended Long Grove Country School. For years the two would meet off and on and talk about all the regular topics friends discuss: what’s on their minds, in their hearts, their husbands, their kids, the economy and so much more.

Mary says, “After a while Amy started talking about baking. She would go on and on about piecrusts and how to make a good crust. She would tell me that mini pies were the cutest and best things ever. I would listen, sip my coffee, listen more about the banana cream pie, the key lime pie, the apple pie...blah, blah, blah. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore and I just blurted, ‘Amy, why don't you start a pie company? I'll help you.’ Three weeks later, The Yummy Pie Company was born.”

It helps that the pair is equally and strongly balanced as Amy has the cooking and food industry background while Mary has a business background. Amy says, “I've always liked to bake and grew up baking. My mom was a baker and she always had something in the oven. As an adult I met my husband who has been in the restaurant business for over 30 years. About a year ago he asked me to help out at the restaurant we own in Evanston called Merle's. I started baking the desserts there like my key lime pie and my banana cream pie. Customers would start asking for the recipes and sometimes would come in only to order a dessert to go. I loved it.” Mary adds that before kids, she ran a brokerage business with over a billion dollars in assets and jokes that whether it’s pies or stocks...it's all the same.

Their business plan is simple and straightforward. They plan to start slow, perfecting one pie at a time. They’re starting with basic pies that will be offered continually such as Banana Cream, Key Lime and Apple. They will then have seasonal pies such as Pumpkin Walnut with a hint of Ginger, Mixed berries and Peach. Eventually they’d like to add savory, meat pies to the menu and possibly offer gluten free and organic options.

Here’s the best news, once your pies are ordered, they are baked the day of delivery (yes, I said delivery) and that is just one less errand for you to do! The freshness is palpable. I tasted an apple pie and no lie I think inhaled it.

Their website is under construction so for more information you can email Mary at: info@yummypiecompany.com
