The Lake County Fielders

Local student sings the National Anthem at a Fielder's game.

For several years in a row, we’d take a quick drive out to Schaumburg to see a Schaumburg Flyers Baseball game. It was a great, inexpensive way to enjoy family time. However this year when I looked into purchasing tickets, I sadly learned that the Schaumburg Flyers had closed their doors, well, actually their field.

At the PPA board meeting last week, I found out about a new team in town called the Lake County Fielders. The stadium is in Zion, at the corner of Route 173 and Green Bay Road, and is owned by baseball fanatic and Academy Award winner Kevin Costner.

Two Long Grove residents are working for the Fielders this summer. SHS grad and Vanderbilt University student Douglas Norfleet is interning there while Georgia Norfleet, junior at SHS, did promotions for the Fielders and was recently asked to sing the National Anthem.

She had only sung the National Anthem once before at a local Little League game.

Georgia said, “I’ve been singing ever since I can remember, and while I'm not currently planning on pursuing a career in music, I adore any opportunity to sing."

"I’m a member of Stevenson’s choir program and cannot say enough wonderful things about it. The directors, Mrs. Nuetson and Mrs. Haqq, are able to help students learn theory and healthy singing practices in a fun environment.”

About the Fielder’s games, Georgia said the baseball games are fun and inexpensive. It’s a great environment with friendly people, great food and even some goofy games for the kids to enjoy.

I’ll have to get tickets and take a trip up to Zion. I wonder if Mr. Costner ever makes an appearance? Now that would be my Field of Dreams!
