Super Bowl Stories

Residents share their insight after attending the Super bowl.

National sports come alive every weekend in many people’s homes. In my house however, the games do not take over our lives or even our family room for that matter. My husband catches the Bears, Bulls or Cubs games when he can, but none of us are die hard fans until it comes to the playoffs, championship games and of course all Super Bowl games.

The Super Bowl this year had lots of folks from our area that attended the game and now that they’re back, I was able to gain some serious scoop about what it’s really like to be at the Super Bowl.

Wynne and David Baruch from Buffalo Grove had never been to a Super Bowl before. They were invited as guests of a corporation and the game was just one of the events they attended. Wynne was cheering on the Packers while her husband, “a true Bears fan,” could only go for the Steelers. They had lots of star-studded moments throughout the weekend; Tobey McGuire (Spiderman) was the one who she spent the most time with as he was working out in front of her at their hotel.

Long Grove residents Geri Sorenson and her husband also attended the game and were lucky enough to have also been at the 1997 Super Bowl when the Packers won in New Orleans. They both are from Green Bay and she said, “Being born there, it is very customary for your parents (as mine did) to put your name on the list for season Packer tickets. After 40 years of waiting, I finally have my four tickets. You have no option but to be a Packer backer.” Her best celebrity sighting was Alec Baldwin, who looks “a bit scruffier than he does on TV.”

At the game, Wynne very impressed with the amount of people they had working the stadium, the seating and the half time show staging. The speed at which they set up was “amazing,” she said. Wynne also said, “It was challenging to NOT watch the live game on the gigantic Jumbo-tron. They told us it weighed as much as a 747 airplane filled with passengers, and it was huge!”

Geri couldn’t have been happier to see her Packers win, yet she shared this story that almost tops it off. They went to the game with another couple and her friend was bragging about the cheap $550 airfare that she had gotten. Geri said it was “almost impossible, especially because she only booked a few days before the Super Bowl.” In turns out when they all got to the airport to leave, their friends’ return tickets were for March 7, not Feb. 7. So much for boasting about the airfare! The Sorensons waved goodbye to their friends as they got on the plane headed home. Geri said, “It was a bit humorous to say the least.”

Hopefully someday soon Da Bears will be in the Super Bowl. Until then, email me with any news, topics or ideas that you want to read about. Remember, I’d like to be the first to know! I can be reached at laurenbgpatch@aol.com.
