Stevenson Spirit Fest this Sunday

National Honor Society plans a fun and charitable day

It's true. The students in the National Honor Society at Stevenson High School are smart. Not only do they have an almost perfect GPA, they also have to accrue leadership hours as well as community service hours.

The other thing they do extremely well is host Spirit Fest.

Spirit Fest is a day devoted to the families of District 125 in an effort to raise money for charity. This year the funds raised will go to the Saving Tiny Hearts Society, which donates 100 percent of its general donations to funding research on congenital heart defects. The founders of the group are Brian and Francie Paul. Brian is a SHS graduate and his mother taught at SHS many years ago.

This year the Spirit Fest will be on Sunday, Sept. 19 and amazing activities are planned. The younger kids can jump to their heart's content in the giant blow-ups and the young teens will never want to leave the velcro wall and bungee race. Of course, the annual 5k walk will be happening as well.

Six SHS student bands will compete in a Battle of the Bands competition, each with a collection bucket to see who get the most donations. The judges will base 50 percent of their score on the amount of change collected for each band.

Students will also have the chance to be part of a Guinness World Record as they attempt to do the world's largest "robot dance" to the 1983 hit, "Mr. Roboto." The record was last set in London with 429 people participating. This should be equally entertaining to either watch or partake in!

National Honor Society President Kayla Reinherz spoke with me and shared how thrilled she was with the support they got from other clubs at Stevenson. Here are just a few that are stepping up to lend a hand: Cultural Cuisine Club, Melange, Scholastic Bowl Club, Hip Hop Club and Student Council.

Way to go National Honor Society. You really are smart. When I went to high school a car wash was the most novel way to raise money for charity! Good luck to you and the Saving Tiny Hearts Society. For more information go to www.d125.org.
