Return of the Ugly Sweater

Ugly Christmas sweaters have gone viral this year!

Along with the lights, the carols, the decorations and the gifts, there is one item that no Christmas is without; it’s the ever-present Christmas sweater.

Whether it’s a bank teller, a Dominick’s cashier, a teacher or a friend, there is always someone that religiously dons his or her Christmas garb. Last year I wrote about a who wore a different Christmas outfit for every day in December, but this year it’s a little different. This year the Christmas sweater has gone viral and the uglier the sweater, the better.

Ugly Christmas Sweater is the new party theme and Good Morning America recently had a segment on the return of the Christmas sweater. has had an Ugly Sweater Day on the last day of school before winter break, but don’t be fooled by the politically correct title, it was all about Christmas.

I headed to Ragstock in Woodfield Mall to get my daughter a new — that means “extremely used” or “vintage” — Christmas sweater, so she could partake in the fun. With hundreds of vests and sweaters on hand, an employee told me that the company collects and stores them in a Minnesota warehouse. From Snoopy Christmas scenes to Nativity scenes on the sweaters, there was something for everyone.

The Patch’s best burger winner also has an Ugly Christmas Party. This was actually the third year they’ve had this party and they assured me the sweaters were over the top. Winners got a $20 gift card and anyone who wore an ugly sweater got a drink special.
