Paraders Provide Candy, Entertainment

Elected officials, marching bands and Shriners were among those who participated in the Buffalo Grove Days parade.

Empty lawn chairs and blankets lined both sides of Bernard Drive for almost as far as the eye could see early Sunday morning as residents reserved their favorite spots early for watching the

 “It gets busy out here,” said David Iontorno, after he jumped out of his green van at about 9:15 a.m., more than three hours before the scheduled start of the parade, to set up four green chairs.

“I’ve got to save some seats for the kids so they can see all the floats and see their brother on one of the floats,” he said. “We’re also saving spots for Grandma and Grandpa to come in from Glenview and Lindenhurst.”

Although he was there early, Iontorno was hardly the first person to save his spots. As per tradition, other chairs and blankets appeared the night before, most of them belonging to residents whose homes sit on the parade route.

“We do this every year,” said one child, who lives along the route. “We reserve the same spot.”

Every empty chair and blanket was filled by 1 p.m., when the parade proceeded down Bernard Drive.

The parade ran for more than 90 minutes and featured 95 units, including the Great Lakes Naval Band and marching bands from , and high schools.
