Butter Cookies Entice Buffalo Grove Blood Donors

Deerfields Bakery cookies help draw donors to the village's drives.

Have you ever donated blood with a motive other than saving lives?

If you've ever participated in a Buffalo Grove blood drive partly because you were craving the treats at the refreshment table, you're not alone.

Blood Commissioner Debi Moritz said that incentives such as the dozens of butter cookies that Deerfields Bakery donates to donors help contribute to the success of the blood drives.

"There are actually a few people who don't feel like coming in to donate, but they will because they know those treats will be there," Moritz said.

She presented Tim Schmitt, owner of Deerfields Bakery, with a plaque Aug. 19 in recognition of the bakery's support. Deerfields Bakery has been donating cookies to the village's blood drives for the past 30 years, she said.

"We can't even imagine a blood drive in Buffalo Grove without these cookies," she said.

The Buffalo Grove Blood Commissions holds quarterly blood drives at the Alcott Center. The next drive is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 31.
