A Little Give and Take

People looking for the ultimate bargains browsed a wide variety of items at the Buffalo Grove Freecycle group's recent "Free for All" event.

Need some light switches, lampshades, shoes, toys or books? Those things and much more were up for grabs at a "Free for All" event on Jan. 22.

“It’s like Christmas without the bows and ribbons,” exclaimed one person, as he walked into the Buffalo Grove Community Center, 50 1/2 Raupp Blvd., to browse the racks and tables of giveaways. The event is described as a free garage sale. People bring stuff and take stuff, but no money changes hands.

Monica Kim found a baby toy at the event.

“This is the first time I ever came to a Free for All. I think it’s pretty cool to bring things you don’t want and then take what you need. It’s a pretty cool idea,” said Kim, who lives in Hoffman Estates.

Victoria Stevens found a great white elephant gift, a dancing palm tree. “I’m a longtime Freecycler,” said Stevens, of McHenry, who likes the idea of keeping unwanted stuff out of the garbage. “We’ve gotten some really incredible things and we’ve given a lot of incredible things out, too.”

Pam Bosworth found a nice full-length sweater coat. She said she’s selective about what she brings home. “I looked at a couple of things and thought, 'Do I need it? No, someone might need it more,'” the Barrington resident said. “I just don’t pick up anything.”

Jerry Dollins of Buffalo Grove brought in several boxes of household items, knick-knacks and clothes, but left empty-handed. “I’m just dropping off,” he said with a laugh. “I’ve got enough stuff.”

The event organizers took leftover items to Goodwill. Those interested in attending future Free for All events and becoming a member of the Buffalo Grove Freecycle Network can register via the group’s site at www.freecycle.org.
