REALITY Theatre Speaks to Bullying Prevention All Year Long

October is National Bullying Prevention Month when schools and organizations that serve youth focus the spotlight on the very real challenge of bullying and creating cultures of support and acceptance.  For the REALITY Theatre Troupe, bullying prevention lasts all year.

REALITY Theatre opened its 2013 – 14 season at Winston Campus Junior High School in Palatine performing its original play, What’s Your REALITY? to more than 800 students, faculty, and staff.  The play, written and developed by REALITY troupe members, follows a group of junior high school students through their Facebook updates, lunch room drama, cheerleading practice, online “vlogs”,  and heart to heart chats.  Using a combination of straight talk and humor, the play points out that bullying is not confined to physical confrontations, but often takes on more sublte forms such as gossiping, verbal putdowns and spreading rumors. It highlights some of the pain that is caused when social media such as Facebook and Youtube are used to insult and demean others. It also shows how kids can stand up for themselves and for each other when these situations occur.
