Sheyman 'Can Beat Dold' in 10th District Primary

Letter to the editor

I support Ilya Sheyman for Congress in the 10th District.

I started out in neutral - knowing neither Brad Schneider nor Ilya Sheyman. After talking to both candidates, I decided to support Sheyman. Brad was just too conservative in his views. If I wanted a conservative, I would vote for Dold.

A recent letter writer called Brad's support of Republican candidates an "artificial issue". In this day of political expediency, it is not artificial. Candidates, like Mitt Romney, change their views with the polls — sometimes on a weekly basis. But he has a record we can judge, and Ilya and Brad do not. So we can only judge how they will govern by what they've done in the past.

Brad has supported several Republican candidates — some, like Mike Johanns, are very conservative, and he did not support Seals against Dold. A progressive, or even moderate Democrat would not have done that. He disagreed with Seals on Israeli and economic policy — so I infer that he preferred Dold's take on those issues, and now he wants to run against him. That makes it especially bothersome that all Brad's literature refers to him as "progressive".

Ilya has a lifetime record of supporting and fighting for Democratic core issues — education, jobs bills, union rights, environmental standards, the public good. And he is a fierce supporter of Israel. He is also willing to listen, discuss, and compromise when necessary. His debating skills are outstanding, he is an accomplished public speaker, and he can outmatch Dold in every arena.

Ilya won the straw poll at the 10th Dems convention on Sunday, with 73% of the vote, to Brad's 6%. (Voters were registered members of the 10th Dems ie involved, savvy Democrats.)

Ilya knows the issues inside and out, has been a real progressive all his life, and can wow a crowd. He's the candidate who can beat Dold and turn the 10th blue for the first time in 32 years.
