Poll: Mathias or Sente?

This election pits two incumbents against each other in the 59th House District race. Which one will you choose?

New political boundaries place State Reps. Carol Sente (D-Vernon Hills) and Sid Mathias (R-Buffalo Grove) in the 59th District beginning this election.

Which candidate will you support? We've created a Patch poll to help gauge voters' opinions in the final days of campaign season. If you'd like to explain your choice, we welcome you to use the comment box below.

The Patch poll will remain open until the official General Election polls close at 7 p.m. Nov. 6. When the results are in, we'll report how Patch readers' votes compare to the official election results.

Don't know what Ms. Sente stands for...all I know is every mailing I received from her was mocking Sid Mathias. That is just obnoxious. With all the bullying issues with kids, what kind of example is this? How can we let her represent us?

While I'm a social democrat, the House of Michael Madigan tried to take out Sid in 2008 in a district that I don't live, but Rita called me crying and I got out his vote with a friend during a very cold weekend before that election, as I did for David Stolman as well. This time they got him, and they used his bond with me to destroy him. It worked because they proved that he caves and I don't think it's about Carol. The Dems want those seats and Sid caved on his stance with me. That is what took him out, in my opinion. I don't cave and like me or not, I've proven that I stand up under the most intense heat and fire, which I did for the people's safety, health & welfare. Per my Oath to the people that I swore to on May 4, 2009. I don't abandon my principles or people to the best of my ability which I've proven time and time again. I have conscience and integrity and speaking up is not an inhibition for me. Obviously, to the contrary. I don't like phonies and hurting people, which is why I was and am trusted by the people. Politics is dirty and I don't play like that, as I was raised better. Women are different than men and in my opinion, & are the best leaders given their instincts to protect children. There can be no tolerance to that standard, and politics interferes with men's desire as they crave power. Women just want the world to be a better & safe place for their children & grandchildren...as I do.

A good man and a good legislator, and as a representative and local, he will be the one to represent our interests.

Carol Sente is someone who TRULY cares about fiscal responsibity, accountability to the tax payers, and fairness to ALL, not special interests. She has a heart for those people dealing with special needs/disabilities, the elderly, and those who don't normally have a voice in government. Carol has a truly "independent" spirit that comes first over politics. Your vote for Carol will could make a difference in the amount of real estate taxes you pay, a cleanup of the Illinois budget crisis, and SO much more. Carol owns her own small business and uses her experience and excellent ideas to help the people of IL and our district. She LISTENS to her constituents! I am voting for her, and I hope that you will too!

If Representative Sente is so independent then why is so much of her campaign money coming from Speaker Madigan?

So, if I understand correctly, the argument for Sente here is, a) that she is not beholden to special interests because Mike Madigan gives her all the funding she could ever need, and b) that she cares, which one imagines is meant to sound like an important quality for a legislator to have. Hardly seems like a reasonable subsitute for her lack of issue familiarity and original thinking.

Sid Mathias is a fiscally-responsible reformer who has shown integrety and decency for suburban interests for years. A vote for Sente, on the other hand, is a vote for Mike Madigan. The choice is BEYOND clear.

I'm a Conservative Republican, always have been, always will be. But Carol Sente will get my vote...do your research people, she's more conservative than her opponent. The facts are the facts, look at her voting record compared to his. She's the ONLY Democrat I've ever supported. She's in it for the right reasons, how do I know this, because I've had the privilege of getting to know Carol over the last few years and I can say with 100% certainty her heart is in the right place and she will do what's best for the people in her district. Those of you who typically vote straight Republican tickets, think twice, and give Carol a chance!!!

The best measure of an elected official is their history. Past performance can give us an indication of what they would do for us in the future.
Look at what Carol Sente has actually done while in office. She has taken a lead role in trying to fix the pension mess in Illinois. She has taken a lead role in curbing property tax increases. She has taken a lead role in fighting wasteful state spending.
Yes, she has received campaign funding from the Madigan camp. But if you look at her record, she has also publicly fought Madigan on several issues - regardless of what some have tried to imply about her. She has acted independently of the Springfield powers to do what is right for the district, what is right for Illinois.

But where I think Carol Sente really stands out is that throughout her term as our representative, she has been proactive in communicating with her constituents, reaching out to us to understand what WE want from her. Since first becoming our rep, she has held dozens of public forums, coffee house meetings, town halls. She has gone door-to-door, she has been VERY visible at community functions to be accessible to her constituents. And NOT just during a campaign!

Sente has been a breath of fresh air in this district. And now that the district has been redrawn and some of you have your first chance to see her in action, you'll see that she is the best candidate for the job!

Carol Sente's first vote if she's re-elected will be for Michael Madigan. Madigan has spent hundreds of thousands on her campaign in an effort to buy the election. Does that sound like an independent? We know where Sente's marching orders come from: Michael Madigan.

Citizen - by your logic then, Mathias will get his orders from Cullerton, the GOP leader in the legislature. Mathias has not claimed to be independent, yet I'm not faulting him for that.
Jim, they have not debated because they could not agree on a date or the topics. They have both appeared at candidates forums. Don't assume that Sid simply is waiting for Carol to offer a date. Takes two to tango, my friend.

Remember, Jim, it takes two to agree on dates. Just because dates were "offered", and not agreed upon, does not mean no response. It means they didn't agree on available dates. And based on MY direct discussions with Sente, she did not refuse, the two camps simply could not agree on dates. Your argument is like calling me up to suggest when we should meet for coffee, and I tell you I'm busy that day.
Again, they did appear at, and participate in, several forums. Why does it only count when its a date and format that Matthias has suggested?
As a 30 year resident of this community, I can tell you that Sente has been more visible, more accessible to her constituents than any other state representative or state senator I've seen here. By far.
I am NOT a Madigan fan, as you know. Sente has NOT backed him to warrant you to say "sold out"! She has often opposed his positions in Springfield, much more than Mathias has opposed his party leaders!

Carol is articulate, pragmatic, intelligent, responsive, caring, logical, accessible, engaged, and recognizes and appreciates the connection between my wallet and the folks (good intentions or not) that either have or want to get their fingers deeper into my pockets.

She listens... Doesn't dodge questions... And takes action...

Cullerton is the Senate President and a Democrat--a HUGE, liberal Democrat from a family of powerful Chicago Democrats. Not sure where the gentleman above gets his information but Cullerton is a Dem and in the Senate, not the House. The leader of the House Republicans is Tom Cross from Oswego, IL. Just wanted to correct that, because otherwise his statement doesn't make much sense.

See the videos above, including Sid Mathias speaking about my Trustee Campaign in 2009. The others are Lake County Chairman-David Stolman, Former BG Trustee Brian Rubin and Former BG President- Elliott Hartstein. What a difference a hardcore dissenting voice makes....
