Police Blotter: Burglaries, Thefts, Late-Night Cooking

The following information was supplied by the Buffalo Grove Police Department. Arrests do not indicate a conviction. Email cristel@patch.com with questions about this blotter.

 

ABANDONED VEHICLE

An officer located a black Acura TL parked in the westbound lane on Lake-Cook Road at the intersection of Arlington Heights Road at 6:20 a.m. Aug. 20. The vehicle had steam coming from under the hood and was leaking fluid. The area was checked but no driver was located. The vehicle was towed and the property from inside the car was inventoried. The registered owner later called to report that the car had been stolen from the parking lot of his apartment complex. Cook County sheriff’s police were contacted to take the stolen auto report.

ALCOHOL

Benjamin H. Mauter, 21, of the 100 block of Sunrise Drive, Wheeling, was charged with driving under the influence and driving without lights when required at 2:20 a.m. Aug. 20 on Milwaukee Avenue near Riverwalk Drive.

Evelyn Paulin, 42, of the 36400 block of Grandwood Drive, Gurnee, was charged with driving under the influence, driving on a suspended license, illegal transportation of open liquor and speeding at 12:30 a.m. Aug. 21 on Lake-Cook Road west of Lexington Drive.

BURGLARY/UNLAWFUL ENTRY

A resident of the 800 block of Marseilles Circle stated that a Hispanic male came to his door at 4:15 p.m. Aug. 19 and stated that he was from the village and needed the resident to accompany him to the back yard to show him where work will be done. The resident accompanied the man, and the resident’s wife, who was in an upstairs bedroom, was met by two other Hispanic males on the stairs. Following some conversation about the work the village will do, the males left. Nothing was taken. The males are described as 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-8 and in their mid-30s. They were wearing black T-shirts, dark jeans, black baseball caps and black gloves. The vehicle they were driving was described as a black four-door sedan. There was a delay in the report. The area was checked with negative results.

A resident of the 2000 block of Jordan Terrace reported that the front door to the house was kicked in between 6:15 and 9:40 p.m. Aug. 20. The K9 team searched the house and found no one inside. Jewelry was missing from the master bedroom.

Someone entered a vehicle between 7 p.m. Aug. 20 and 8:30 a.m. Aug. 21 on the 300 block of Dogwood Terrace and removed the faceplate to the stereo and a flashlight from the center console. There were no signs of forced entry.

COMPLAINTS

A resident of the 100 block of Wildflower Circle reported that there was a strong odor in the hallway, coming from a neighboring unit at 12:40 a.m. Aug. 20. An officer detected the smell of food cooking. The resident stated that she was concerned because someone cooking so late could fall asleep and burn the building down. The officer spoke with the neighbor, who stated that she and her sister had been cooking and that everything was fine.

A complainant stated that while she and her husband were walking their dogs at 6:10 p.m. Aug. 20, they noted a male with two dogs off leash swimming in the retention pond at Northlake Park. The male’s dogs then came running at the complainant and she yelled for the subject to get his dogs. The subject started yelling and using obscenities. Officers checked the area for the dogs and the male with negative results.

Officers responded to a loud party at 7 p.m. Aug. 20 on the 400 block of Thorndale Drive and the resident stated that the party was for his 14-year-old son and his friends. Officers found no one intoxicated and no alcohol on the premises. They did find a plastic bag containing marijuana, a bong, two cans of an alcoholic energy drink and a backpack containing shorts and a scale. The items were located in the retention pond northeast of the party.

A resident of the 1200 block of East Deerfield Parkway reported that his neighbor was in his parked car with both doors wide open at 8:10 p.m. Aug. 20. When the resident requested that the neighbor close one of the doors so that the resident could park his car, the neighbor complied, but made rude comments. The neighbor had departed so the officer could not speak with him.

CURFEW

A 15-year-old Deerfield resident was charged with curfew violation, driving without a valid license and no proof of insurance at 2:20 a.m. Aug. 22 on the 1300 block of Johnson Drive.

FOUND ITEM

A resident reported finding a gray purse in the bushes at 2:55 p.m. Aug. 19 on the 600 block of Cobblestone Lane. There was on identification in the purse and it was placed into property at the police department.

A man reported Aug. 20 that he found his son’s stolen bicycle chained to a bike rack. The serial number from the Arlington Heights police report was verified. The bicycle was removed from the rack and returned to its owner. Arlington Heights police will follow up.

PROPERTY DAMAGE

A resident of the 600 block of Hackberry Court West reported that a vehicle did “doughnuts” all over the baseball diamond behind his house between 11 p.m. Aug. 20 and 3 a.m. Aug. 21. The vehicle then drove over a berm in his backyard and drove across the lawn.

A resident reported that while she was westbound on Port Clinton Road from Buffalo Grove Road at 5:20 p.m. Aug. 21, a person in a black vehicle traveling in the opposite direction threw an object that cracked her windshield.

SUSPICIOUS INCIDENT/VEHICLE

A resident of the 200 block of Stanton Drive reported a white Ford van driving around the area and the driver stopped several times in front of a neighbor’s house at 9:45 a.m. Aug. 20. The area was checked with negative results.

A resident of the 1-100 block of Villa Verde reported Aug. 21 that when he returned home from an extended trip, he found that someone removed the digital transport adapters and corresponding remote controls to two of his televisions. There was nothing else taken from the apartment.

A man stated that when he returned to his vehicle at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 21 in a parking lot on the 1100 block of West Lake-Cook Road, he found the side window open and the door unlocked. The glove box and center console were open but nothing was missing. Divorce papers that were in the back seat area were found strewn on the floor. The man believes that his wife entered the car and went through the papers. An officer left a message with the wife.

THEFT

A manager at Jewel reported that a female placed merchandise into her purse and left the store without paying at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 21. The female paid for the items after being stopped, and the manager did not sign complaints.

A male reported  that his unsecured Schwinn bike was taken from the bike rack at 9 p.m. Aug. 21 at Taco Bell. The bike is valued at $1,000.
