A 13-year Buffalo Grove resident, Johnson was selected from a field of seven residents who applied for the position.
Johnson is a longtime community volunteer who has been involved with the Grove United Soccer Association, the Raupp Museum and the Village of Buffalo Grove’s Arts Festival.
She is also the executive director of a developing charity, Visual Aid Soccer Foundation, which was established to assist youth athletes with vision-related expenses.
The mother of Mia, a senior at Stevenson High School, Johnson described herself as "just a regular resident" who will work as a park district commissioner to improve an already strong organization.
"We're doing things well, but we can always do things better," she said.
She said she'd like to find ways for the park district to remind residents that programs and facilities are easily accessible. An increased presence on social media platforms might be one way to reach out to more residents, she said.
“My goal is to get to know the people who shape our community and to build long-lasting relationships," she said.
"I believe I am wired to serve," she said. "We give our money to different organizations. I feel an important thing is giving our time and skills."
Johnson is a certified professional in human resources and the managing principal at Populus XP, LLC, a human resources consulting services company.
Her consulting experience includes six years of human resources advisory services and nonprofit human resources management. She also volunteers as a human resources consultant with the Taproot Foundation.
She holds a master’s of jurisprudence in business law from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Columbia College. She also completed course work at DePaul University in e-commerce and communication.
Johnson will serve on the Buffalo Grove Park District Board until April 2013. Voters will then elect a candidate to fill the remainder of Weiss’ term, which expires in April 2015.
Johnson said she plans to run for a full term at that time.
