Go Green at the Buffalo Grove Green Fair on June 24

Mike Rylko Community Park will host a number of activities to teach visitors about water conservation, reducing greenhouse emissions and recycling, kid-friendly activities will also be included.

If you are interested in going green, a visit to the Buffalo Grove Green Fair is definitely in order.

Information at the fair will include a range of eco-friendly steps everyone can take, including water conservation methods and how to reduce our carbon footprint.

Did you know that 12 percent of the garbage we throw away in our households are food scraps?  Those scraps — which end up in landfills — create additional greenhouse gas emissions.

Composting certain food items in place of throwing them away can help to reduce those gasses in our atmosphere. Instruction on how to compost will be one of the many educational offerings at the fair.

Water conservation steps, such as creating attractive rain gardens or using rain barrels, both of which capture water for reuse, also will be highlighted.

And if you’ve got the kids with you that day, eco-friendly kid crafts will be available as well.

Fair attendees will also be able to drop off recyclable items, including:

  • Household Batteries
  • CLF Bulbs
  • Small Electronics (cell phones, laptops, gaming systems, inkjet cartridges, MP3 players, cameras, GPS devices, radar detectors)
  • Keys
  • Eye Glasses and Hearing Aids
  • Gently Used Books
  • Yoga Mats
  • Athletic Shoes

The Green Fair is sponsored by the Buffalo Grove Environmental Action Team along with a number of organizations that will provide "green" education to attendees.

The event and will be held at from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. June 24 at Mike Rylko Park, next to the Farmers Market.
