SHS Principal Earns Mathematics Honors

Stevenson High School Principal Dr. John Carter received the Mathematics Alumni Award in Mathematics Education from Illinois State University on Thursday, May 10. The award recognizes the accomplishments of ISU mathematics alumni who have made significant contributions to mathematics education during their career.

The ISU honor is Carter’s second major mathematics award this month. He also has been announced as the 2012 recipient of the Lee Yunker Mathematics Leadership Award from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Yunker, a nationally recognized leader in mathematics education, was the mathematics department chairman at West Chicago High School and Carter’s first mentor. The award recognizes contributions Carter has made in the field of mathematics education inside and outside of Illinois. He will be honored at the NCTM regional meeting in November.

Carter is the co-author of more than 20 mathematics textbooks, including "Reasoning and Sense Making," part of the Focus in High School Mathematics series published by NCTM. SHS Director of Mathematics Dr. Gwendolyn Zimmermann is co-author of "Reasoning and Sense Making in Algebra," in the same series.
