Buffalo Grove Honors Its Students of the Month for May

Buffalo Grove High School has chosen Students of the Month for May, with selections based on the efforts and contributions of one exceptional student in each of the six divisions of the school.

Junior Alyssa Gillespie of Arlington Heights was nominated as English/Fine Arts Student of the Month by choral director Debora Utley, who commented, "Alyssa is a true leader.  She leads through gentle command as well as by example.  Alyssa is always prepared and the perfect example for our program."

Junior Michelle Eloiza of Wheeling was nominated by history teacher Heidi Haen to be honored as the World Languages/Social Science/English Language Learners Student of the Month. "Michelle has been a standout in both my World and U.S. History classes the past two years," said Haen. "Her participation and attentiveness in class is second to none.  She can always be counted on to help a peer gain the knowledge necessary to find success.  Michelle is also very bright in history.  Her ability to retain information, make conclusions, and ask questions are all hallmarks of an excellent student."

Senior Matt McGill of Buffalo Grove is Student of the Month for Student Services. "Matt works tirelessly in his quest to find the perfect college fit while maintaining a straight A status," said Individual Resource teacher, Kim Gach. "He always helps his peers as needed, while becoming quite independent himself. Matt has grown since his freshman year into his own person, who is much more engaging with others as he developed skills to improve his communication and social skills.  Matt scored very well on his ACT and has accomplished what we have asked of him. He is a role model for our younger students, as we want all of them to achieve to their highest independent level."

The Math/Science department recognized freshman Chae-Eun Lee of Mount Prospect for her achievements.  Math teacher Ronda Whippo commented, "Self-motivated, inquisitive, hard working, reliable: these are just a few of the characteristics I would use to describe Chae-Eun. She is currently enrolled in Honors Advanced Algebra 481 where her desire to learn both the English language as well as mathematics is remarkable and admirable. She is a role model and an inspiration to ELL students and native English speakers alike."

Career and Technical Education selected junior Katherine Shanahan of Arlington Heights as the department's honoree. Business teacher Tom Mroz said, "Katherine is a key asset in College Accounting this year.  She placed second overall at the Harper College Accounting Contest this past month and is the chief financial officer that every student in class looks to for help.  Not only is Katherine fantastic with numbers in accounting, she is also part of the State-qualifying Math Team and is on the Junior class board, serving as the Treasurer."

Senior Stefhany Duarte of Buffalo Grove has been named the Physical Education / Health / Driver's Education Student of the Month. Teacher Jamie Kapsimalis commented, "Stef has been a 325 club member, which means she has earned the top value on the scoring scale in all four categories of the physical fitness testing required of all P.E. students. She is a well-organized, responsible dance leader and very motivated to be physically fit. She encourages others to work harder and her peers really respect her."
