Creative writers from Buffalo Grove High School claimed several writing awards in the Harper College High School Writing Competition this year, as reported by BGHS creative writing teacher, Kate Glass. All together, Buffalo Grove captured 11 awards in this year’s contest, the highest number a District 214 school has received in the competition.

Receiving 1st place for Poetry was senior Zak Kloes.  Senior Kate Opalko earned a 2nd place for her Poetry and seniors Samuel Frye, Jon Park, Christopher Racz, Brittany Schmitt and Kathleen Strack all won honorable mention. 

In the Drama category, senior Stacie O’Brien received a 3rd place award and senior Miguel Melgar received an Honorable Mention. 

Strack also won 3rd place for Fiction, where Schmitt additionally won an Honorable Mention.

The students will be honored at a luncheon at Harper Community College on May 16.
